By Priya NagiJasprit Bumrah is doubtful for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final between India and Australia as the fast bowler’s back issue has hampered his career.

The 29-year-old Bumrah has been out of action since September 2022. One of the most lethal bowlers, Bumrah missed the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup last year due to a back injury. He was drafted into India’s ODI squad against Sri Lanka, but he did not take part.

Bumrah missed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 and will remain on the sidelines for the upcoming IPL. Amid all this, former New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor believes India still have a lot of seamers that are fantastic and enjoy bowling with the duke ball. Bumrah was wicketless during the first-ever WTC Final between India and New Zealand.

In a special interaction arranged by the ICC, Taylor told India Today named Mohammed Siraj, who did not play in the first-ever WTC Final, saying he would relish the opportunity to bowl with the duke ball in English conditions. The World Test Championship Final between India and Australia will be held from June 7 at The Oval.

“Siraj didn’t play in that final. I think there are still a lot of seamers that are fantastic and enjoy bowling with the duke ball,” Taylor told India Today.

“Shami and his seam presentation, the way he bowls with the new ball. I think he is going to enjoy bowling with the duke ball. These players bowl in all conditions and the way they go about it. Umesh Yadav also bowls 140-plus. They will relish the opportunity to bowl with the duke ball and in English conditions.”

Siraj sits in second place in the list of Indian wicket-takers in ODIs since the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He has taken 41 wickets in 22 ODIs. Siraj, who made his debut and played only once in January 2019, became part of India’s scheme of things from 2022. His growth got acceleration in over one year as the management moved on from Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Siraj is also the most successful bowler in the powerplay since the 2019 Cricket World Cup, having picked up 26 wickets at 22.85. He is closely followed by Australia’s Mitchell Starc (25 wickets at 20.16).
