By India Today Sports DeskExperienced boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin showed his class by posting a convincing win over Macedonia’s Alen Rustemovski in a men’s 57kg first-round bout in the featherweight category and began his quest for a medal in the World Boxing Championships.

Hussamuddin’s international barren run ended with a bronze medal at the 2015 Military World Games. He has progressed since then, and he is now one of the best boxers in the country in his weight class.

Hussamuddin continued to shine in 2019, winning silver at the Gee Bee Boxing Tournament after winning bronze at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and gold at the Chemistry Cup. He won silver at the Boxam International in March 2021 and bronze at the CWG and Asian Championships in 2022.

Hussamuddin, one of the squad’s most experienced campaigners, will be looking to make an impression at his first World Championships.

Hussamuddin (57kg), a two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, dominated Rustemovski in the first round, winning 5-0. The Telangana-born pugilist made a cautious start to the fight, but quickly shifted gears to establish his dominance over the Macedonians.

Hussamuddin was able to land punches accurately and secure a unanimous decision by utilizing his strength and high technical ability.

Varinder Singh went down fighting against Mujibillo Tursunov of Uzbekistan in the 60kg category, losing 0-5 and exiting the competition.

Tokyo Olympian and 2019 Asian Championships competitor Ashish Chaudhary and debutant Harsh Choudhary will compete in their respective tournament openers on Tuesday. Ashish (80kg) will compete against Iran’s Meysam Gheshlaghi, while Harsh (86kg) will compete against Australia’s Billy McAllister. BFI has sent a 13-man team to compete in the ongoing event, which has 538 boxers from 107 countries competing, including several Olympic medalists.

Debutant Harsh Choudhary (86 kg) will look to make an instant impact as he will take on Australia’s B. Mcallister on Tuesday. Nishant Dev (71kg), who finished in the quarter-finals in the 2021 edition will take on World championships bronze medallist Sarkhan Aliyev of Azerbaijan.
