Uthup narrated her experience with typecasting and said how she got lucky on the work front all thanks to the blessings of her fans.
HOW THE AUDIENCE SHAPED HER CAREER
“My biggest inspiration is my audience. I come from a very middle-class family. My father was in the police service. So I am what I am thanks to the love of the people who listened to me,” Usha Uthup said while talking about what inspired her.
ON BEING TYPECASTED AS A SINGER
“Typecasting existed as high-pitched voices like those of Lata Ji or Asha Bhosle were considered fit for the heroines. When I came, I was typecasted into singing cabaret or night club songs. I was happy because even if I got one song, it would ensure over 750 ‘para’ (locality) shows for me in Bengal. I have been very very lucky,” she added while talking about how her career took off.
“But then the times changed and I sang for Sridevi, Rekha and other heroines as well. But only when these ‘good girls’ were doing something bad or evil. I sing in 17 languages and it has been a great journey for me,” Usha Uthup said in the Sahitya Aaj Tak 2023.
