In 2022, Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of NBCUniversal’s advertising division, was asked to interview Elon Musk. Musk was considering buying Twitter, and Yaccarino was one of the people he wanted to talk to about the company’s future.
During the interview, Yaccarino told Musk that she was concerned about his habit of tweeting after 3 am. She said that his late-night tweets often caused controversy and could damage Twitter’s reputation.

“For example, you’ve said you probably shouldn’t tweet after 3 a.m.,” Yaccarino said. “Will you commit to being a little more specific and not tweet after 3 a.m.?” she had asked.

Musk was initially defensive about his tweeting habits. He said that he used Twitter to communicate directly with his followers and that he wasn’t going to stop just because some people didn’t like it.

However, Yaccarino persisted. She told Musk that he had a responsibility as the owner of Twitter to be more careful about what he said. She also pointed out that his late-night tweets could be seen as unprofessional and could make it difficult for Twitter to attract new advertisers. In the end, Musk agreed to Yaccarino’s request. He said that he would “aspire to tweet less after 3 a.m.” but that he wouldn’t allow other people to dictate what he could and couldn’t say. “That would be a diminishment of freedom of speech,” Musk said.
