To save your verified status, the only way that exists right now is to buy a Twitter Blue subscription. It costs Rs 900 on Android phones or iPhones.

In Short

  • If you subscribe via the web, the cost comes down to Rs 650.
  • Web subscribers will not lose on any features, but it is cheaper since there’s no commission involved.
  • Twitter is removing the Twitter Blue tick from legacy accounts in the absence of a Twitter Blue subscription.

By Abhik SenguptaCome April 1, Twitter will remove the legacy verified badge, commonly known as the blue tick, from accounts to boost the sale of its subscription, Twitter Blue. After Twitter got acquired by Elon Musk last year, the company announced new plans to increase the userbase and revenue. One of the key updates the company announced was the launch of Twitter Blue. The subscription includes much-demanded features such as long-form tweets (beyond 280 characters) and undo/edit tweets. Later, to make the subscription more appealing, Musk said that the Twitter Blue subscription would bundle the blue tick. In other words, users can now get verified on the platform by paying a monthly fee in addition to providing their mobile number.

How to save verified status on Twitter

Some speculate that Twitter’s decision to remove the verified badge from legacy accounts could be Musk’s grand April fool prank, but that’s just speculation. If the company sticks to their decision, legacy accounts will remove the blue tick mark.

To save your verified status, the only way that exists right now is to buy a Twitter Blue subscription. It costs Rs 900 on Android phones or iPhones. If you subscribe via the web, the cost comes down to Rs 650. Web subscribers will not lose on any features, but it is cheaper since there’s no commission by Microsoft and the browser developer on in-app purchases. Apple and Google charge a 30 per cent commission fee if you purchase any subscription or app service.

On the other hand, users who got verified because of the Twitter Blue subscription do not have to worry. The blue tick will remain on your profile as long as the subscription is active.

Twitter badges
While Twitter is removing the Twitter Blue tick from legacy accounts in the absence of a Twitter Blue subscription, there’s still an option. Twitter is rolling out “Verified Organisations” that help brands and publications distinguish themselves on Twitter. The profile page of the brand’s page, say Apple, will get a dedicated badge that represents the company logo. Twitter says that it is also extending companies the ability to verify their own employees. As a result, workers affiliated with the organisation will also receive a badge that bears the company logo.

Twitter says, “We’ve already seen organisations, including sports teams, news organisations, financial firms, Fortune 500 companies, and non-profits join Verified Organisations and list their affiliated accounts publicly on their profiles. And starting today, Verified Organisations are available globally. We are now sending email invitations to approved organisations from the waitlist.”

It seems companies can apply for the “Verified Organisations” for free.
