By Ankita ChakravartiTomatoes have become the talk of the town due to their sky-high prices. It’s gotten so crazy that ketchup has taken over as a tomato substitute, and even McDonald’s has ditched tomatoes from their menu. But guess what? Despite their costly nature, tomatoes remain a crucial ingredient in every Indian home. Indian cuisine simply can not do without them as they add that perfect texture to our mouthwatering gravies. So no matter the price, we will have to buy tomatoes. The best we can do is check for places that offer discounts on the vegetable.

Before comparing the tomato prices on various online platforms, we enquired about the tomato prices from my local vendor. The tomatoes are currently selling for Rs 150 per kg. The prices could go up and down depending on the locality. In certain areas in Delhi NCR, like Gurgaon, the tomato prices are crossing the Rs 200 per kg mark. Similarly, if you go to the sabzi mandis in Delhi, like the Okhla mandi and the Azadpur Sabzi, you can get the veggies at a much lower rate. So this was about the offline market. What about the online grocery apps like Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket and Blinkit? Are they any better? Let us have a look.

On Swiggy Instamart, tomatoes are priced at Rs 111 for 500g and if you wish to buy 1Kg of tomato, you will have to shell out around Rs 221. This is not all, if you are not a Swiggy One subscriber, you may even have to pay the delivery fee, if your cart value is not enough.

When comparing tomato prices among grocery delivery apps, Blinkit turns out to be slightly more expensive than Swiggy Instamart. For 500 grams of tomatoes, Blinkit charges Rs 112, and the price goes up to Rs 222 for one kilogram. Additionally, customers are also required to pay delivery charges. Overall, the prices offered by Swiggy and Blinkit are quite similar.

Now let’s shift our focus to BigBasket. Unlike Swiggy and Blinkit, BigBasket does not offer same-day delivery. However, it does provide the most affordable tomatoes, whether you’re shopping online or offline. Upon checking the BigBasket app, we found that they offer three types of tomatoesLocal, Hybrid, and Organic, each with its own price point. The Local tomatoes are priced at Rs 71 for 500 grams and Rs 143 for one kilogram. The Hybrid variety costs Rs 61 for 500 grams and Rs 122 for one kilogram. Lastly, the organically grown tomatoes are priced at Rs 67 for 500 grams and Rs 134 for one kilogram.
In summary, while Blinkit is a bit pricier than Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket stands out as the platform with the most competitive tomato prices, offering different options to cater to various preferences and budgets.
