By Abhik SenguptaSamsung is reportedly working on its own version of the Apple Vision Pro reality headset, though the launch may take some time. According to the South Korean news publication SBS, Samsung was planning to start mass production of its mixed-reality headset early next year. However, it has informed partners about a delay as the company is reexamining the product following Apple’s Vision Pro launch last month.

The report, citing an industry source, states, “I understand that the decision was made considering the specifications of Apple’s mixed reality (MR) headset ‘Vision Pro’, a competitor. We decided to reconsider.” The report adds that the project time has been delayed by one to two quarters (up to six months) than originally planned.

Specifications of the Samsung mixed-reality headset remain unclear, and even the moniker is unknown. Samsung is seemingly working with Chinese display company BOE and its in-house display division to develop the product. The company may continue its work with Google for a custom operating system for the headset.

Samsung is not unfamiliar with the VR headset market and the company has experimented with Gear VR co-created with VR company Oculus, now owned-by Meta. Samsung also launched Odyssey Plus with the Windows Mixed Reality platform in 2018. The OS was essentially an extension of Windows 10 OS.

However, Samsung VR headsets could not garner mass attention, similar to reality headsets and “smart” glass by others, like Google and Snap. Remaining VR headsets are often seen as an extension of gaming consoles, which automatically limits their mass appeal. Companies like Microsoft have also laid off members from its mixed reality division, Hololens, as a part of its restructuring plans amid the global tech slowdown.

Apple is trying to change perception with its latest $3,499 (roughly Rs 2.89 lakh)-worth Vision Pro headset. It is also positioning the Vision Pro as a standalone product that is capable of offering iPhone, Mac, and iPad features. Users can even make FaceTime calls with a headset. The Vision Pro, similar to traditional reality headsets, overlays images on to the real world. However, users can select icons or overlay a virtual keyboard with simple gestures.

Apple has designed custom sensors, chips, glasses, and OS (operating system) for the Vision Pro. The company is working closely with developers to build apps for its new product. For Samsung, the challenge would be to convey a similar message with its next headset. The South Korean tech giant may also want to gain an edge by keeping the price relatively more affordable.
