The folding segment is seeing new entries, so to continue being the leader, Samsung needs to up its game this year.

In Short

  • This year, Samsung might face some competition in the foldable segment.
  • Samsung may rework the hinge so that the crease is less visible on the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
  • The Z Flip 5 may come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

By Ashri KhandelwalSamsung is the sole king when it comes to foldables. Even though there were issues with the crease and the hinge, the Galaxy Z Fold and the Flip series still piqued the interest of a lot of users in India. And since there was absolutely no competition, Samsung foldables were the only option buyers had earlierâ€æbut time has changed now!

The folding segment is seeing new entries. Oppo Find N2 Flip is available at Rs 90,000, Tecno Phantom V Fold at Rs 88,888, OnePlus has confirmed to launch a new foldable device by the end of 2023, and Vivo is also expected to bring its foldable device in India soon. So, what does Samsung need to do to continue being the leader in the foldable segment? Let’s take a deep dive into leaks, rumours and everything that we are expecting from the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Launch date

This one is pretty easy to guess and almost confirmed – the Galaxy Z Flip 5 should launch in August, just like the Z Flip 4 last year and the Z Flip 3 before that. The official launch date has not been confirmed yet, but the launch will mostly happen in the next four months.

New design

Now, talking about the phone itself, first up – there could be improvements in the design and the crease. Samsung may rework the hinge so that the crease is less visible. The two sides of the foldable display could also fall flat on top of each other without a gap in the middle. We might also see some new colours – Beige, Gray, Light Green and Light Pink.

Bigger cover display

Next, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 may bring a larger outer screen this time. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 got a 1.9-inch cover display, which was pretty small for a screen so we could see a big outer screen that may add more features and controls. If we go by the leaks, then the screen could be even bigger than the 3.26-inch second screen of the Oppo Find N2 Flip.

Better chip

Another safe thing to assume is that the Flip 5 will get an upgraded chipset. It may come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, which Samsung recently used on the Galaxy S series.

Besides this, Samsung needs to bring changes in three main departments – the camera, the battery and the price.

One of the biggest pain points of all flip phones has been their average cameras, so it’s about time Samsung fixes that. It should use better and bigger sensors on the Z Flip 5 as well as upgrade the selfie camera.

Even in terms of battery, Samsung needs to up its game. The Z Flip 3 had a 3300mAh battery, the Z Flip 4 had an improved 3700mAh battery, but there is still a lot of scope for improvement. And now that Oppo has managed to fit in a 4300mAh pack inside its Find N2 Flip, Samsung definitely needs to bring improvements in the battery life.

And lastly, the price needs to come down. Tecno has launched its foldable in India at almost half the price as that of Samsung. Other brands may drop an affordable flip soon. So, let’s hope Flip 5 costs less than Rs 89,999.
My wish is – Rs 79,999. Fingers crossed.

We are only a couple of months away from the launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 5, so let’s hope to see these welcome changes. Do let me know in the comments what you would like to see in the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5.
