By India Today Sports DeskThe dismissal of a well-set Shubman Gill brought in Rahul Tewatia, with Gujarat Titans still needing five runs from the last three balls against Punjab Kings in the IPL 2023 match.

PBKS’ Sam Curran nailed two back-to-back yorkers, conceding only two singles as Tewatia and David Miller could not connect. With Tewatia back on strike to face the penultimate ball, he moved across and scooped the length ball over fine leg for a boundary.

This was not the first time Tewatia got the Gujarat Titans over the line against Punjab Kings. Tewatia had executed his role of a finisher to perfection in 2022, when he hit two sixes in the final over against PBKS to guide GT to victory.

Tewatia opened up on his role, saying that he has been practising the art of a finisher for the last three-four years. He also revealed that the role was first given to him in 2020 at Rajasthan Royals.

“Leg side was a bigger boundary, could have gone for a two but it looked risky. In my mind I thought playing a ramp was a better shot. I backed myself to play the shot and executed it perfectly,” Tewatia said in the post-match press conference.

“I was given this role in 2020 when I was playing with Rajasthan Royals. In the 14 league games, you tend to bat in such situations eight or nine times. Most of the time batting comes in 13-14 overs.

“For the last 3-4 years, I have been practising this. I set targets for myself through match situations. Match stimulations in open nets also gives me a better idea on how to take chances in a particular situation and how I should finish the match,” Tewatia said.

The Titans’ star Tewatia also heaped praise on Punjab Kings bowlers for making things difficult for GT batters while chasing the target of 154 at Mohali.

“Credit for PBKS bowlers for making a string come back after we have had a flying start. Ball was reversing in the last and it was difficult to hit as well,” Tewatia said.
