By Ankita ChakravartiA strange thing happened to a woman in Mumbai. She wanted to help an injured bird she saw at work, but it ended up causing her a lot of trouble. The woman named Dhwani Mehta, who works at Famous Studios in Mahalaxmi in Mumbai, became a victim of a clever trick by cyber fraudsters, which made her lose a lot of money. The police found out about this when she reported it. She tried to save a bird without realising that the act of kindness would land her in deep trouble.

As per a Hindustan Times report, it all started when Dhwani saw the injured bird and wanted to find help for it. Since she didn’t know any bird rescue organizations, she searched on Google. Little did she know that this simple search would lead to her losing money.

Dhwani found a toll-free number for an NGO and called it for assistance. But she didn’t know that the people on the other end of the line were actually cyber fraudsters pretending to be helpful.

The scammers quickly sent her a link to a complaint form, which Dhwani filled out and submitted. She even had to pay ₹1 to register her complaint. Unfortunately, no rescue team came to her office as promised.

After four days, while Dhwani was on a train, she received a message saying that Rs 99,988 had been taken from her bank account. She realized that she had been tricked, so she took action. She reported the incident to the Cyber Crime Department online and went to her bank to file a written complaint.

Dhwani didn’t give up. She went to the police and filed a complaint against the fraudsters for impersonation, cheating, and forgery under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The police officer in charge of the case is working diligently to find the culprits. They have contacted the bank and cellphone companies to get information about the account where the money was transferred. They are determined to bring the fraudsters to justice.

This incident serves as a reminder to be careful and cautious when using the internet. Scammers are getting smarter and are always ready to take advantage of unsuspecting people.

Dhwani’s experience with the injured bird taught her a difficult lesson. Her story is a warning to others to think twice before trusting a toll-free number found on the internet.
