By India Today Auto DeskThe Mahindra Thar 5-door has been in the news for a long time now. The wait to see this vehicle in the flesh will finally be over when it makes its global debut on August 15. The sport utility vehicle (SUV) will be unveiled in South Africa, which has become an important market for Mahindra & Mahindra.

Till now, the Thar 5-door has been spied testing in India on multiple occasions. However, all the spied units have been heavily camouflaged.

The Thar 5-door launch in India will take place next year only. During Mahindra’s Q4 and FY23 financial results announcement, the company said that the SUV in a 5-door iteration will be introduced in 2024.

While the Thar 3-door is arguably the most popular off-roader in India, the Thar 5-door is expected to augment the volumes further by attracting more buyers looking for an SUV for their family.

Expectations are that Mahindra will add more tech and features to the Thar 5-door and not just two more doors. The SUV with an electric sunroof has already been spied testing. All the new enhancements will be made public at the time of the unveiling.

Mahindra Thar 3-door has three engine options — 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel (117bhp/300Nm), 2.2-litre mHawk 130 CRDe diesel (130bhp/300Nm) and 2.0-litre mStallion 150 TGDi petrol (150bhp/320Nm). The 1.5-litre diesel only has a 6-speed MT option. However, the 2.2-litre diesel and the 2.0-litre petrol have 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT choices. The SUV also has both RWD and 4WD options.

It will be interesting to see what all engine-transmission combinations the Thar 5-door will get and whether there will be only 4WD or both RWD and 4WD.

The Mahindra Thar 3-door price is between Rs 10.54 lakh and Rs 16.77 lakh (ex-showroom). We expect the Mahindra Thar 5-door price to be much higher, given the enhancements it will receive.
