IPL 2023Shubham Gill set to win Orange Cap after going past Faf du Plessis in leaderboard

By India Today Sports DeskShubman Gill continued his brilliant IPL 2023 campaign by capturing the Orange Cap from RCB skipper Faf du Plessis on Friday in the Qualifier Two match between GT and MI.

Gill has been enjoying a prolific year in international cricket, having scored centuries in all formats of the game and also a double hundred in ODIs against New Zealand.

The 23-year-old carried this form into IPL 2023, where he has been GT’s highest run-scorer while enjoying his most prolific campaign in the competition.

In the 15 matches he played, heading into Qualifier Two, Gill had scored 722 runs at an average of 55.54 and a strike-rate of 149.17. Gill had scored two back-to-back hundreds in the last two league games for GT against SRH and RCB respectively.

Gill has scored two hundreds and four fifties this season and was hot on the heels of Du Plessis, who also had a fantastic campaign in the IPL this year.

The RCB skipper scored 730 runs in IPL 2023 in 14 matches. Gill needed nine runs to surpass Du Plessis on the day and was able to easily go past that.

On Friday, Gill started off his knock with a single off Jason Behrendorff’s bowling. The 23-year-old got a three and a boundary off Green’s next over and then took a single to go past Du Plessis.

Gill wouldn’t stop there as he continued to play his shots and entered the 800-run club and then smashed his third hundred of the season to put GT in full control of the game.

Gill was finally dismissed for 129 runs off just 60 balls and his knock consisted of seven boundaries and 10 sixes.
