By India Today Sports DeskKane Williamson, on Sunday, April 2, was ruled out of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) due to an injury that he sustained during Gujarat Titans’ opening match against Chennai Super Kings on March 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

“We regret to announce, Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the TATA IPL 2023, after sustaining an injury in the season opener against Chennai Super Kings. We wish our Titan a speedy recovery and hope for his early return,” the Titans wrote on Twitter.

The veteran sustained the injury while trying to save a boundary during CSK’s injury. Thereafter, he landed awkwardly on his knees and later walked off the park. Later, the Titans roped in Sai Suadharsan as an Impact Player, replacing Williamson in the batting lineup.

The Titans are yet to name a replacement for Williamson, who was bought by the 2022 champions at his base price of INR 2 crore. David Miller and Matthew Wade are the overseas batters who could replace the New Zealander in GT’s batting order.

The Titans started their campaign by beating CSK by five wickets. Rashid Khan became the Player of the Match after he finished with impressive figures of 4-0-26-2. Shubman Gill scored 63 off 36 as the Titans chased down 179 with four balls left in their innings. Rashid and Rahul Tewatia held their nerve to help their team go past the finish line.

The Titans are next scheduled to lock horns with David Warner’s Delhi Capitals on Tuesday, April 4 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
