By India Today Auto DeskHyundai Motor India will launch the all-new Hyundai Exter SUV in the country today. This will be the carmaker’s most affordable SUV and add more teeth to its SUV portfolio, which also includes the likes of Venue, Creta, Alcazar and Tucson.
While Hyundai was the largest SUV maker in India in 2020 and 2021, it was overtaken in 2022 by Tata Motors. Even Mahindra & Mahindra sold more SUVs. With the Hyundai Exter SUV launch, the carmaker will look to regain its lost glory in the SUV space.
The Exter is also important from a volume point of view. Tata Motors has been continuously challenging Hyundai for the position of India’s second-largest carmaker. A major push for Tata Motors has come from the Nexon and the Punch. While the Nexon is the SUV segment leader now and way ahead of Hyundai’s Venue, the Exter will look to clock similar sales to the Punch, if not more.
Before the Hyundai Exter SUV launch takes place later during the day, here are five important details you should know about it.
Hyundai Exter on-road price
We expect the Hyundai Exter price to be in the range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9.50 lakh (ex-showroom). The on-road price for the top-end model might exceed Rs 10 lakh. There are 15 variants in all from five trims — EX, S, SX, SX(O) and SX(O) Connect.
Hyundai Exter mileage
We expect the mileage of the Exter to be over 19kmpl (ARAI) for the petrol MT and petrol AMT models. The Exter CNG mileage in MT could easily be over 25km/kg.
Hyundai Exter specifications
The carmaker has already shared that the Exter will employ the 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine, which we also find in the popular Grand i10 Nios and the Aura. It generates 83PS of maximum power and 113.8Nm of peak torque. The transmission options include 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT. There is also a CNG option with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
From what Hyundai has officially shared till now, we know that the Exter has a wheelbase of 2,450mm and a height of 1,631mm.

Hyundai has loaded the cabin of the Exter will a lot of features, including an 8-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, digital instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch coloured TFT MID, automatic climate control, semi-leatherette upholstery, seatbelt reminder for all seats, dashcam with front and rear cameras and a 2.31-inch LCD display, six airbags, and cruise control. The vehicle gets a segment-first electric sunroof. Even the dashcam is segment-first and not found in models of higher segments of other OEMs.
The important exterior features include a parametric grille, projector headlamps, H-signature LED DRLs, H-signature LED taillamps, front and rear skid plates and diamond-cut alloy wheels.
