Honda’s electric two-wheeler model has been in the works for some time now.
By India Today Auto DeskHonda Motorcycle & Scooter India will showcase its future electric vehicle (EV) roadmap on March 29. The domestic arm of the Japanese auto giant and the second-largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country in terms of volume does not offer any electric model at present.
The company’s domestic volumes increased 21.16% year-on-year at 3,827,985 units in April-February FY23 as against 3,159,301 units in April-February FY22.
While the Indian two-wheeler market has some big Japanese names like Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki, none of them has introduced any electric model as of now. However, all three are working on EVs for India.
In comparison, Indian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Hero, TVS and Bajaj, have already launched at least one EV. While Hero has introduced the Vida V1, TVS offers the iQube and Bajaj sells the Chetak.
Honda’s electric two-wheeler model has been in the works for some time now. With EV sales witnessing unprecedented growth, particularly in the two-wheeler segment, the time is perfect for the company to showcase its EV roadmap.
The company recently entered the lucrative 100cc segment, launching the Shine 100 at an introductory starting price of Rs 64,900 (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The Honda Shine 100 rivals the likes of the Hero Splendor+, Hero HF Deluxe and Bajaj Platina 100.
Honda’s mass-segment motorcycle line-up includes the Shine 100, CD 110 Dream, Livo, Shine 125, SP125, Unicorn, X-Blade, Hornet 2.0 and CB 200X. The company sells scooters like the Dio, Activa, Activa 125 and Grazia 125.
The premium motorcycle range of the company includes the CB300F, CB300R, H’ness CB350, CB350RS, CB500X, CBR650R, CB650R, CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP, Africa Twin Adventure Sports and Gold Wing Tour.
