By India Today Sports DeskIt is homecoming time for Frank Lampard as the former Chelsea manager is set to be appointed as the interim coach until end of the season.
Lampard, who has been out of job since his sacking from Everton in January, has agreed to take over as Chelsea’s interim manager, Reuters reported, while club owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali continue to find a replacement for Graham Potter.
On April 3, Chelsea sacked Graham Potter after a string of poor results. Potter, who left Brighton and Hove Albion to join Chelsea in September 2022, lasted for only 31 matches, winning only 12. After Potter’s departure, Chelsea named Bruno Saltor to “take charge of the team as interim head coach”.
In Saltor’s first assignment, Chelsea played a 0-0 draw with Liverpool.
Lampard’s return to Stamford Bridge could bring joy to Chelsea fans as he was considered as the heart and soul of the London-based club. Lampard was part of Chelsea’s midfield a trophy-laden 13 years. He, however, could not find success as Chelsea manager between 2019-21.
Chelsea had infamously sacked Lampard, the club’s all-time top scorer with 211 goals, in January 2021 after just 84 matches in charge.
Lampard could face an uphill task at Chelsea, who spent almost 300 million pounds in the January transfer window.
While securing Champions League qualification for the next season seems difficult, Chelsea’s hope of winning a third UCL title is still alive. Chelsea will face a stiff challenge from the reigning champions Real Madrid later this month.
