By Abhik SenguptaThe Reliance Jio Phone 5G is expected to launch later this year, though ahead of the debut, its images have surfaced online. According to the images shared by a Twitter user, Arpit Patel, the Jio smartphone will include a pill-shaped camera module on the back and don Reliance’s distinct dark blue tone. The camera system may comprise a 13-megapixel AI camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera. There’s another cutout for the LED flash. The Twitter post also shows the front of the phone. The image suggests a tall display, likely 6.6 inches in size. The front panel may have a waterdrop notch — a common design practice for smartphones under Rs 10,000, which should also be how the Jio Phone 5G will be priced.

The front panel also displays a Jio 5G speed test that shows a download speed of 479Mbps, though the area of the speed test is not clear. The phone’s condition in the photos is quite beaten, indicating that this could be a dummy unit or likely a production unit. The actual Jio Phone 5G may look different but with negligible tweaks. The Twitter user also highlighted that the Jio Phone 5G may include a Dimensity 700 SoC or a Unisoc 5G chipset. The front panel may house a 5-megapixel camera. Additionally, the Reliance Jio Phone 5G may launch on Diwali or New Year.

Other specifications remain unclear, though we can expect the phone to run on a tailored Android OS, called Pragati OS, thanks to Jio’s partnership with Google. Reliance may also offer some benefits to existing Jio users, in terms of data benefits. Regardless, Reliance is already letting users test its high-speed 5G internet for free of cost. Customers only need to ensure that they are using the eligible Jio plan (only for prepaid customers).

Apart from smartphones, Reliance is slowly entering other hardware segments. Recently, the company launched an inexpensive Apple AirTag-inspired JioTag for Rs 749. The Bluetooth-enabled tracker is designed to help users “locate all your belongings with ease.” Apart from that, Jio also has a WiFi Mesh Extender for barely Rs 2,499. The product helps users extend their Wi-Fi range and coverage.

However, the availability of Jio products, at least on online channels, remains a challenge. The Jio Phone Next, Reliance’s much-hyped Rs 6,499-worth Android smartphone remains unavailable on its Jio website. Even some Jio Fi portable routers are out of stock.
