The Finance Ministry is anticipated to evaluate the products and services tax (GST) rates used on digital news membership, based on sources.

This follows the Information and Broadcasting Ministry made the suggestion to the Finance Ministry to decrease the GST rate on digital news membership, sources included.

The upcoming conference of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is arranged to occur in New Delhi on September 9, 2024.

The statement was made through a post on X on August 13, which stated, “The 54th GST Council Meeting will be hung on 9th September 2024, in New Delhi.”

Presently, printed papers, journals, and regulars are excused from the GST.

Under the IGST Act, online news memberships are taxed at 18% as Online Information Database Access and Retrieval (OIDAR) services, that is, a web service that has no physical user interface in between the provider and recipient of the service.

Online news memberships are consisted of in the sub-category of services for “ supply of images, text, and details and providing of databases.”.
