FIFA World Cup 2022 final referee Marciniak to officiate Champions League summit clash

By India Today Sports DeskPolish referee Szymon Marciniak has been picked to officiate the Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10, following his previous role as the referee for the FIFA World Cup final in December 2022.

This appointment by UEFA marks a rare achievement as Marciniak will now referee the biggest finals in both national team and European club football within the same season. The 42-year-old received acclaim for his handling of Argentina’s World Cup victory over France in a penalty shootout in Doha, Qatar.

UEFA also announced the referees for its three other finals. Anthony Taylor from England will oversee the Europa League final between Sevilla and Roma on May 31 in Budapest, Hungary. Carlos del Cerro Grande of Spain, at the age of 47, will officiate his first European final in the Europa Conference League clash between Fiorentina and West Ham on June 7 in Prague.

Meanwhile, Cheryl Foster of Wales will referee the Women’s Champions League final between Barcelona and Wolfsburg on June 3 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, where all the match officials, except video review specialist Massimiliano Irrati of Italy, will be women.
