Chelsea are reeling at the 11th spot in the Premier League table with 39 points, 32 behind leaders Arsenal after 29 matches in the season. Potter was sacked on April 2 after a string of poor results.

Frank Lampard was only sacked as Everton manager in January. The English midfielder was in charge of Chelsea between 2019 and 2021 and he was sacked by the Stamford Bridge Club in January 2021 after 84 games in-charge during which he took them to the FA Cup final.

‘We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge. Frank is a Premier League Hall of Famer and a legend at this club. As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season. We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line,” co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said in a statement.

‘We have an important game against Wolves on Saturday and then we will turn our attention to our Champions League quarter-final in Madrid next week. We are all going to give Frank our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games,” they added.

Frank Lampard’s appointment comes at a time when Chelsea are exploring options for their full-time manager position. Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique and former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann are among the top names who are linked to the job.

Chelsea spent a record sum of close to 300 million pounds in the January transfer window and Lampard will be hoping to get the best out of them in the remainder of the season.

Chelsea look unlikely to finish in the top 4 after having had a woeful run so far but they are still in the hunt to win the Champions League title. They will face in-form Real Madrid in the quarter-final tie in April.
