By Divya BhatiA recent incident in Bengaluru has once again highlighted the issue of misconduct by cab drivers towards female passengers. This time, a cab driver connected with Uber flashed a woman during her ride. Horrified by the incident, the woman shared her ordeal on the social media site LinkedIn, which went viral on the platform.

According to the victim’s post, she started her ride from BTM 2nd Stage to JP Nagar Metro in the cab, and everything seemed normal. However, within a few minutes of the start of the ride, the woman became frightened when the driver took a different route. Observing the driver’s suspicious behaviour, the woman filed a complaint on the Uber app, after which the driver began following the map again.

However, after the uncomfortable ride, the woman decided to end her journey with an early drop-off before reaching the intended destination. But as soon as she paid the fare, she was left traumatized and appalled after the driver exposed his private parts to her.

“At that moment, I immediately fled from the driver, seeking solace within the safety of a nearby crowd. Shock and confusion consumed me, making it difficult to collect my thoughts,” she wrote.

Soon after she shared her inappropriate experience with an Uber ride on LinkedIn, her post went viral. The matter was even seen by the ride-hailing service, after which it took the necessary action.

Sharing the action on Uber against the driver, the woman wrote another post on LinkedIn and wrote, “I wanted to give an update regarding the incident that occurred yesterday. The Uber team reached out to me and conducted a thorough investigation into the matter to understand both sides of the party involved. I am grateful for their swift response and the intensive efforts they made to address the situation. They have taken the necessary actions against the driver involved.”

“It is reassuring to know that Uber took this matter seriously and took appropriate steps to ensure the safety of their passengers. I hope that their actions will serve as a reminder that incidents like these should never be tolerated and that customer well-being remains a top priority,” she added.

While the incident is not new, many women have raised concerns over the indecent or suspicious behaviour of cab drivers. To ensure safety, the company itself takes appropriate action and even offers a few safety features that passengers can use during the ride itself.

Here is the list of security features you can check while taking a ride in an Uber cab or auto.

  • 24X7 safety lineUber provides a 24X7 Safety Line, allowing customers to reach out to Uber support agents through the app or by dialing 88006-88666. This feature is available during the trip and extends for 30 minutes after the trip ends, assisting with urgent non-emergency matters.
  • Audio rear seatbelt reminder: Uber emphasizes safety by reminding both drivers and riders to wear seat belts. The app sends seat belt reminders to riders on the driver’s phone and provides push notifications on the rider’s phone before the trip begins.
  • SOS IntegrationIn addition to the in-app emergency button that connects riders and drivers to local emergency services, Uber has introduced SOS integration with the local police.
