15:36 IST:

4.2Stuart Broad to David Warner, No run.

15:35 IST:

4.1Stuart Broad to David Warner, No run.

15:35 IST:

We are done with the formalities as the umpires walk towards the pitch. The English players take their respective positions on the field as David Warner and Usman Khawaja stride out to the center to resume their opening partnership. Stuart Broad has the ball in his hand and is ready to begin proceedings. Let’s play…

15:33 IST:

Both sets of players line up on the ground along with the umpires and everyone will give a round of applause for 45 seconds in memory of Bob Willis.

15:30 IST:

It is Blue for Bob Day in honor of former England captain and fast bowler Bob Willis which means Edgbaston will be decked in blue today and the players will don blue caps. Blue for Bob is designed to raise awareness for prostate cancer and encourages people to donate to the cause. Also, there is a slight delay to the start of the game as we will get going 5 minutes later at 3.35 pm IST (10.05 am GMT).

15:16 IST:

The news from Edgbaston is that we had rain this morning and the covers were on the pitch. It is overcast at the moment and there will definitely be more on offer for the bowlers on Day 2. England will be thrilled as there was very little help from the wicket with the sun glaring down on Day 1 and this could provide the hosts with the perfect opportunity to make their declaration count. Stay tuned as we bring you further updates on the weather as we close in on the morning session of the second day of the first Ashes Test match.

14:40 IST:

The Australian openers survived the four overs at the end of the day and made 14 runs without losing a wicket. Earlier in the day, Nathan Lyon was the pick of the Aussie bowlers with four wickets to his name, while Hazlewood picked up two scalps. Both teams will be equally happy with their efforts on Day 1. Australia will look to bat well and get over 550 in their first innings to put some pressure back on the Ben Stokes-led side. A thrilling day is in store for us. Stay tuned, as we shall be with you to bring the live action shortly.

14:37 IST:

England, opting to bat first on a flat pitch at Edgbaston, lost Ben Duckett early in the innings. Zak Crawley looked in sublime touch and added 70 runs for the second wicket with Ollie Pope. Root and Brook carried on the momentum and stitched another half-century stand before Brook was bowled in a rather unlucky manner. Stokes followed him soon after, and England were struggling at 176 for 5. Bairstow came in and steadied the ship with Root by adding 121 runs in quick time. Root added valuable runs with the lower order and notched up his 30th Test ton. He remained unbeaten on 118 before England decided to declare.

14:36 IST:

Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Day 2 in this first Test between England and Australia at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. England carried on their attacking brand of cricket and scored 393 in just 78 overs. Ben Stokes made a bold decision to declare and have a bowl at the Aussies. England could have easily gotten close to 450 in their first innings, but their change in mindset and approach, since Stokes took over, wouldn’t have surprised many. We witnessed an entertaining Day 1 in the Ashes, and Day 2 promises to be equally exciting.

14:30 IST:

… DAY 2, SESSION 1 …

23:13 IST:

England have kept up with their recent reputation and have played with positive intent through Day 1 with the declaration coming as a show of strength by Ben Stokes. This could easily backfire if Australia manage to consolidate their position on Day 2 with the bat and it could easily take the game away from the hosts. The action continues on Saturday 17th June as we shall have Day 2 of this first Ashes Test which promises to be equally entertaining. The first ball will be bowled at 3.30 pm IST (10.00 am GMT) but do join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

23:07 IST:

Australia looked completely shaken by the Jonny Bairstow onslaught as the 121-run partnership for the sixth wicket which came in just 140 deliveries threatened to take the game away from them. They lacked any sort of plans and when Alex Carey dropped Bairstow behind the stumps, it looked like Australia were in for a long day. That was not the case though as the English batters decided to self-destruct and Nathan Lyon got two of them stumped trying to send him out of the ground. The deceleration by England meant that he missed out on another five-wicket haul and he had to settle with four wickets. Cameron Green disturbed Stuart Broad’s stumps and got his first wicket of the game. They had a long day in the office with all the batters going after them barring Joe Root who showed his class with a well-constructed inning but they kept chipping away at the wickets. They would have not expected to bat though but David Warner and Usman Khawaja handled the pressure well and went into Stumps unscathed as they trail by 379 runs which puts them in a better position going into Day 2.

23:04 IST:

SESSION SUMMARY – 167 runs, 30 overs, 3 wickets. England continued from where they left off at Tea break as they came out into the final session looking to play their shots and accumulate the runs. Jonny Bairstow looked to be at his dominating best as he scored freely and reached his half-century in his comeback Test. His aggression brought about his downfall as he looked to charge the spinner and was stumped having scored a run a ball 78. Moeen Ali came out to the middle and looked to continue the onslaught and scored a quickfire 18 but became the second England batter who found himself stranded well out of the crease. Stuart Broad looked comfortable at the wicket and just when it looked like he would play the supporting role to Joe Root, he played a rash shot and saw his stumps shattered. Root continued to accumulate runs on the other end though and reached his 30th Test century with Ollie Robinson doing a good job to give him company. With 393 runs on the board, England decided to have a go at the Australian openers but were unable to get a breakthrough in the 4 overs that they bowled.
