The Met Gala 2023, as is the norm, is slated to take place on the first Monday of May, i.e. May 1 (May 2, 4:00 am IST) at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Dubbed ‘fashion’s biggest night out’, the event is infamous for a display of avant-garde fashion and head-spinning red carpet looks. We’re talking Rihanna as a bejewelled pope, Katy Perry as a chandelier, Kim Kardashian in a face-covering suit, Priyanka Chopra’s velvet gown with bejewelled headgear, Billy Porter as an Egyptian sun god and the list can go on!

Some of the biggest celebrities attend the event in head-turning outfits in sync with the theme. While the guest list for each year’s Met Gala is kept secret until the stars arrive on the red carpet, reports suggest that Alia Bhatt will be making her debut at the event in a Prabal Gurung creation. As for the Met Gala 2023 theme, it is ‘Karl LagerfeldA Line of Beauty’.

Every year, the Met Gala has a theme according to which the celebrities have to dress up for the event. This year, Met Gala will honour fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019, under the theme of ‘Karl LagerfeldA Line of Beauty’. The legendary designer headed several luxury fashion houses, including Chanel, Balmain, Fendi, Chloe and his own eponymous brand. The guests at Met Gala will have a lot to experiment with and take inspiration from.

WHO WILL ATTEND MET GALA 2023?

The Met Gala guest list is often dubbed as a top secret and is not unveiled. It is only once the red carpet opens that the celebrities turn up to announce their presence. However, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra, Billy Porter and Beyonce are among the regular attendees. Some reports earlier suggested that Kim Kardashian is not invited to the fashion gala this year. The rumours, however, were rubbished soon after.

Several Indian celebrities, including Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, have made note-worthy fashion statements at the Met Gala previously. In 2022, Natasha Poonawalla made heads turn in a Sabyasachi saree teamed with a metallic Schiaparelli bustier at fashion’s biggest event. Isha Ambani and Sudha Reddy have also walked the Met Gala red carpet in the past.

This year, Alia Bhatt is expected to make her Met Gala debut in a Prabal Gurung gown.

CAN YOU ATTEND MET GALA?

Not really! You cannot even just “buy” a ticket and attend Met Gala. Only people who are famous or powerful and get an invitation can attend the event. Everyone at the Met Gala event is an A-lister.

According to a report by the Associated Press, companies generally buy tables. “A fashion label — Michael Kors, for example — would then host its desired celebrities or fashion muses. But each paid seat reportedly costs around $35,000, though some guests are invited for free,” the report said. The ticket prices for Met Gala 2023 have been raised to $50,000 (Rs 41,12,975).
