Google-backed delivery platform Dunzo fires around 300 employees on a company-wide call

Google-backed Dunzo’s CEO and Co-Founder Kabeer Biswas said that the company is extending ‘the best support possible’ to help employees during this tough time.

Also, the decision of layoffs were announced during a company-wide conference call on Wednesday, a Business Today report revealed. This is not the first time that Dunzo has announced its decision to fire people. In January this year, the company had trimmed 3 percent of its workforce in order to cut costs. Dunzo, a Bangaluru-based start-up operating in the same space as Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy, is an on-demand delivery platform that lets people to order anything that they need from the comfort of their homes.

The news of layoffs has been dominating the tech space for the last couple of months and more and more companies are announcing their decisions to let go off people. A lot of techies have shared their layoff stories on social media and, while some were miffed at their companies for handling layoffs in a haphazard manner, others were optimistic and thanked their former employers for all the opportunities that they came across while working for them.

Dunzo fires 300 employees

Sources told Business Today that Dunzo announced its decision to conduct another round of mass layoffs on Wednesday during a company-wide call. While the exact number of employees affected remains ambiguous, it could be somewhere around 300 as the company has decided to let go of 30 percent of its workforce.

A source told Business Today, “The leadership conducted an organisation-wide call in which everyone was there and the layoff announcement was made. It was followed by a town hall also in the evening, where we could ask questions.”

Another source revealed to the publication that after layoffs announcement, the impacted employees got a face to face session with their managers.

Further, the layoffs were conducted to ‘cut costs and streamline the company’s operations’.

Previous layoffs at Dunzo

In January this year, Dunzo announced laying off 3 percent of its workforce. The company’s CEO and Co-Founder Kabeer Biswas, while talking to CNBC-TV 18, said that the company is extending ‘the best support possible’ to help employees during this tough time. He said, “Any decision that impacts people is tough and always our last option.”

The CEO added, “Whatever the numbers, these are people who chose to build their careers with Dunzo, and it is sad to have talented colleagues leave us.”

Dunzo reportedly incurred a net loss of Rs 464 crore in the financial year 2022.
