In Short

  • Prithvi Shaw has scored 19 runs from 2 matches in IPL 2023
  • Shaw has been dismissed by Mohammed Shami and Mark Wood
  • Capitals have lost both their matches in IPL 2023

By India Today Sports DeskVirender Sehwag wasn’t delighted after Delhi Capitals’ (DC) batter Prithvi Shaw faltered for the second time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The right-handed Shaw started his knock with a four against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Tuesday, April 5, before Mohammed Shami accounted for his wicket.

Shami dug in a short ball and Shaw tried to pull the ball away. But the batter failed to time the ball properly and holed out to Alzarri Joseph at mid-on. Sehwag said that Shaw should take a leaf out of Shubman Gill’s book going ahead in his career.

“He has been dismissed playing those kinds of shots so many times… but he should also learn from his mistakes, right? Look at Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him and is now playing Test, ODIs and T20Is for India, but Shaw is still struggling in IPL,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Sehwag, who recently played in the Legends League Cricket in Ghaziabad, reckoned that it’s high time Shaw started showing some consistency in the IPL similar to Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

“He has to make the most of this IPL platform and score runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 600 odd runs in an IPL season. Shubman Gill also scored big runs. So even Shaw has to be consistent with his IPL scores,” he added.

When Shaw got out on Tuesday, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar also talked about the flaw in the batter’s technique. “Once again that backfoot has done him in, it doesn’t move at all,” Gavaskar said.

Shaw started his campaign in IPL 2023 with a knock of 12 runs against KL Rahul’s Lucknow Super Giants before Mark Wood rattled his woodwork with an absolute peach.

In 65 IPL matches, Shaw has scored 1607 runs at an average of 24.72 and a strike-rate of 147.3 with 12 half-centuries and a top score of 99 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to show for his efforts.
