By India Today Auto DeskHyundai Motor India today announced that it will soon launch a new sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the country. This model is likely to sit below the Hyundai Venue and rival the Tata Punch, which has become one of the volume drivers for Tata Motors.

The new Hyundai SUV launch in India is expected to take place around the festive season. This model will be based on the same platform, which underpins the Hyundai Aura and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.

We expect the Hyundai SUV 2023 to employ the 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine, which is also used by the Aura and the Grand i10 Nios. This engine develops 83PS of maximum power and 113.8Nm of peak torque. The transmission options include 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT.

It can be a possibility that Hyundai offers a CNG option with this new sub-compact SUV. The 1.2-litre Kappa unit already has a bi-fuel (petrol + CNG) choice. However, in the CNG mode, the power and torque figures get reduced to 69PS and 95.2Nm, respectively. Also, there is only a 5-speed MT on offer.

Hyundai is known to offer class-leading features in its cars. We can very well expect the company to treat the SUV 2023 similarly. Among the features we expect are LED headlights and taillights, an electric sunroof, touchscreen infotainment, automatic climate control and a wireless charger.

The new Hyundai SUV price is expected to be between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). For reference, the Hyundai Venue price starts at Rs 7.72 lakh (ex-showroom). The Tata Punch is priced between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 9.47 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hyundai sells some of the most popular SUVs in India, including the Venue, Creta, Alcazar and Tucson. It also offers electric SUVs like the Kona Electric and the Ioniq 5.

The Indian arm of the South Korean auto giant clocked its best-ever volumes in the domestic market during a fiscal at 567,546 units in FY23. However, Tata Motors was not far behind as it also posted its best-ever domestic volumes in a fiscal at 538,640 units in FY23.
