By India Today Sports DeskIndia captain Rohit Sharma has said that Suryakumar Yadav is just going through a rough phase at the moment and claimed that the middle-order batter was unfortunate to register three golden ducks in a row against Australia.

Suryakumar had a series to forget against the Aussies as he was dismissed in the very first ball on all three occasions. Mitchell Starc trapped him in front of the stumps in the first two games, while Ashton Agar cleaned him up in the match in Chennai. This was a turning point in the third game as the visitors brought themselves back into the contest and clinched the series after a 21-run win in Chennai.

The three matches were crucial for the 32-year-old to get a foothold in the ODI side, especially with the fitness issues surrounding Shreyas Iyer and with the World Cup coming up later this year.

Speaking at the press conference after the third ODI, as quoted by Sportskeeda, Rohit said that there isn’t too much to read into Suryakumar’s performances as he played only three deliveries. The India captain did say that the 32-year-old chose the wrong shot against Agar in the series decider.

Rohit further commented that it was unfortunate that Suryakumar could only play three balls in the series and such a situation could happen to any player.

The India captain concluded by saying that the 32-year-old is going through a rough phase at the moment.

“He played only three balls in the series. I don’t know how much you can look into it. He got three good balls. Today, (Wednesday) I didn’t think it was that great a ball. He just chose the wrong shot. He should have, maybe, come forward. He knows best.”

“He plays spin so well, which is why we wanted to hold him back and give him that role of last 15-20 overs. But it’s really unfortunate that he could only play three balls in the series. That can happen to anyone. The potential, the quality is always there. He’s just going through that phase right now,” said Rohit Sharma.
