All in readiness for the start of play on Day 2! The umpires are out in the middle as the Indian players are seen in a huddle led by Rohit Sharma. The Australian players will wear black armbands to honor the recent passing away of skipper Pat Cummins’ mother. The overnight batters for Australia, Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green also stride out to the middle. It will be Ravindra Jadeja (20-2-49-1) to start proceedings with the ball here.
PITCH REPORT – Murali Kartik is pitchside and he is joined by Dinesh Karthik. The latter says that run-scoring will get a little difficult, the ball won’t turn much but the wicket will get slower. Adds that the odd delivery might straighten enough for the spinners but the pitch doesn’t have many demons on it. Murali Kartik ends by saying that Day 2 will be a hard battle for the batters.
India, on the other hand, struggled a bit, as their spin trio was not as effective as it was in previous games. However, Mohammad Shami bowled really well on this tough wicket and picked up two crucial wickets, and he will look to get some early breakthroughs on Day 2 to quickly wrap up the Australian innings. Australia put on their best batting display in this series on Day 1, avoiding any kind of collapses. Usman Khawaja was the star of the show with his class hundred, and he will come out to bat along with Cameron Green to take them to a huge first innings total.
Hello and welcome to our coverage of Day 2 of this fourth and final Test between India and Australia. The Aussies are in a good position, and they will want to strengthen that, while India will hope to make some early inroads and comeback into this game.
… DAY 2, SESSION 1…
Right then, finally a day of test cricket on this tour where we didn’t see the ball doing all sorts of things and this makes the final Test very interesting. Australia will now target the 350-run mark and set the tone for the rest of the game whereas India will look to pick up early wickets on Day 2 and keep the score as close to 300 as possible. It will be interesting to see which side is able to make their mark on the second day. Day 2 will begin on Friday at 9.30 am IST (4 am GMT) but you can catch our build-up a lot earlier. Cheers!
Usman Khawaja, the man of the moment is down for a quick chat. Khawaja says a lot of emotions are running through him and it is his third tour to India and finally getting a hundred here feels really special. He adds that at the start of the day and in the later stage of the day, they did not talk about anything and he just kept giving the strike to Travis Head early on and then to Cameron Green who was seeing the ball like a basketball. He also adds in his celebration that Green just wanted a hug as he wanted to congratulate him and they celebrated a bit emotionally. He also adds that he would like to thank all the coaches and those who supported him and helped him with the warm-ups that are best for him.
India will be a touch disappointed with that effort and even though the pitch wasn’t anywhere near a raging turner, the overall intent with the ball was lacking. The hosts did extremely well to knock over Steven Smith and Peter Handscomb fairly early in the final session but couldn’t go on and use that momentum in their favour. The bowlers bowled quite a few quiet overs but the wickets didn’t come and once the second new ball was taken, runs started to flow quite thickly for the opposition and India ended the day on the back foot.
Australia came into the final session with just a couple of wickets down but the scoring rate was pretty low. Steven Smith got out early in the post-Tea session and he looked tentative to score runs. Peter Handscomb came out and played a few shots but was dismissed soon after. After that though, Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green remained watchful till the second new ball was taken. Green went into overdrive and punished the bowlers with Khawaja ticking along nicely as well and the latter ended with an unbeaten ton, the first by an Aussie batter on this tour.
Session Summary – 28 overs, 106 runs and 2 wickets! An unlikely first day of Test cricket comes to an end, and we say that because the norm for the series has been wickets tumbling left, right, and center but this was a day that was dominated by the batters. Australia will be very happy to end the day with still 6 wickets in hand whereas India will look to come back stronger on Day 2 and pick up early wickets.

Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja began the session looking extremely comfortable and kept rotating the strike with odd boundaries coming their way. Usman Khawaja got to his third half-century in this series and continues to be a thorn in the side of the Indian bowlers. Steven Smith also looks good at the wicket and Australia will be hoping their two main batters can continue the good work. The final session is crucial for both teams as India will need to wrap up this inning soon as they will bat in the fourth inning while the Aussies have a golden opportunity to take this game away from the hosts. A session that belongs to Australia as they have taken control of this game with a 77-run unbeaten partnership in 238 balls accumulating 74 runs in this session and not losing a single wicket which has happened for the first time in this series. They have set up a wonderful platform to put up a dominating first-inning total and India are already chasing the game after two sessions on Day 1. Ravichandran Ashwin had a long spell but could not make much of an impact with the other bowlers not troubling the set batters as well. The hosts have not been able to get much purchase off this wicket and if they do not break this partnership soon, it could prove to be a long day in the office for them.

Travis Head started off a bit tentatively but the dropped catch when he was on 7 woke him up and he started playing his strokes with much more intent which proved to be fruitful for the Aussies. He however played on shot too many and was eventually dismissed on a score of 32 looking to clear the infield. Marnus Labuschagne chopped one back onto his stumps but Usman Khawaja has looked at ease on this track. The Indian bowlers will have to be patient on this track as the pitch is not helping much so far. Will Australia continue to accumulate runs and build a strong first-inning score? Or will India claim a few more wickets after the break and grab the game by the scruff of the neck? We will find out what unfolds in the afternoon session shortly. A shared session as the Aussies had the better start to the game putting on 75 runs on the board so far but India fought back well with a couple of crucial wickets to stake their claim in the game. Steven Smith will be happy with the way the openers started after winning the toss as the openers added 61 runs. Indian bowlers had their radar off to begin proceedings as they were all over the place and could not build any sort of rhythm. Srikar Bharat denied Umesh Yadav a wicket as he dropped an absolute sitter behind the wicket giving Travis Head a lifeline but wickets from Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammad Shami along with some disciplined bowling in the last half an hour have brought the hosts back into contention.

We are moments away from the start of the game but first, the two sets of players will line up on the field. The prime ministers will be escorted by their respective captains as they introduce their teams to their leaders. It is now time for the national anthems and it will be Australia’s national anthem first followed by the national anthem of India.
Rohit Sharma the skipper of India says that they would have batted first as well but they know what they have to do now and they need to do it well. Informs they have one change with Mohammad Shami coming into the side in place of Mohammed Siraj. He adds that it is always good to have time off and it allows them an opportunity to reflect on their performance and hopefully they can get what they want in this game. Regarding the pitch, he says that the surface looks good and they are not sure when it will begin to spin but they are hoping it stays true for all five days.
Steven Smith the captain of Australia says they will be batting first and informs that there are no changes. He adds that the surface looks really good but it will be hard to say till they come out to play. Mentions that the spinners have performed well so far and they will have some help from the wicket as the game goes on. Reckons that the next series in India will be four years away which is a long time away and he would have to wait and see if he returns.
