By Abhik SenguptaWe are already hearing rumours about the potential launch of the OnePlus 12 despite the release of the OnePlus 11 in February. A new report suggests the development of an OnPlus 12R — the toned-down variant of the OnePlus 12. The phone could first be released in China in December or even early January 2024. The global launch, including India, will be followed after that. OnePlus is also going to launch its first folding smartphone, likely to be called OnePlus V Fold or OnePlus Open in the coming months.

According to MySmartPrice, the OnePlus 12R 5G will succeed the OnePlus 11R and feature a flagship-grade chipset. The report also includes renders provided by popular tipster OnLeaks. Based on the renders, the OnePlus 12R looks similar to the existing OnePlus 11 with a round rear camera module. We can also notice the alert slider to manage sound modes on the left. Like many other OnePlus smartphones, the OnePlus 12R will continue to feature a hole-punch cutout at the front.

In terms of specifications, the OnePlus 12R may come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC — the same chipset that powers OnePlus 11 5G. The phone may include 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is becoming a standard memory configuration for premium OnePlus smartphones. There’s also said to be a 5,500mAh battery with 100W fast charging. It is an unusual battery size as many OEMs generally include a 4,500mAh battery with fast charging to minimise the charge time. A bigger battery could also add extra weight — making the phone thicker.

The rear camera module may include a 50-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. For selfies, the 12R 5G will reportedly feature a 16-megapixel front camera.

Meanwhile, the regular OnePlus 12 may include a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. We may continue seeing OnePlus’s collaboration with Hasselblad to tune the rear cameras. The rear camera system may include a 50-megapixel primary camera sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera. On the front, a 32-megapixel camera may assist with selfies.

Similar to the OnePlus 12R, the OnePlus 12 is expected to include a large battery. There might be a 5,400mAh battery with 100W wired charging. In addition to this, it is also said to offer support for 50W wireless charging tech.

The price of both phones remains unclear. Typically, OnePlus phones with the ‘R’ moniker are much more affordable than the regular numbered series. It will be interesting to see how the phone is priced and positioned as it bears a lot of similarities to the OnePlus 11, which is a much more expensive device at Rs 56,999. The OnePlus 11R starts at Rs 39,999.
