By Ankita GargOppo is back with new Reno series phones and a promise of better camera capabilities and overall performance. The company has fixed the areas where its predecessor didn’t fare well. Priced at Rs 54,999, the new Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ boasts an industry-first 60-megapixel telephoto rear camera along with one more large sensor. It certainly exudes a visually appealing appearance, leaving a favourable initial impression. However, upon examining its specifications, one might feel that it falls under Rs 50,000 price category. So, is the Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ 5G primarily focused on aesthetics, or does it deliver commendable performance and camera capabilities that justify its steep price? Let’s find out in our detailed review.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ review design, display

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ has a unique design, which is refreshing to see. With a glossy glass panel, an oval-shaped rear camera module, curved edges and dual-finish paint, the new Oppo phone looks gorgeous. Though, it is a bit hard to differentiate the front of the phone from the flagship OnePlus phones. I liked that the device doesn’t have a broad form factor, and is also a bit lightweight despite having a 4,700mAh battery, large rear camera sensors and other hardware internally. I believe it is better to use the phone with a case as it wobbles when kept on a flat surface and a case would also protect the back panel of the phone.

The front of the new Oppo Reno phone is more or less the same as the OnePlus 11R. It has a massive 6.7-inch 1.4K screen with a typical punch-hole cut out on the top for the selfie camera. The screen refreshes at a maximum of 120Hz refresh rate. It is designed to support refresh rates of 45Hz, 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz, which automatically adjusts based on the content. However, in our review unit, we observed that it cycled between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz only, with a preference for spending most of the time at 120Hz. Hence, the scrolling experience on social media apps, juggling between multiple apps and navigating the UI was pretty smooth. The OLED panel gets reasonably bright in harsh sunlight, though it isn’t the brightest one that we have seen in the market. The automatic brightness adjustment works well, which is something that not a lot of phones are able to deliver rightly. Also, this didn’t seem to affect the battery life of the device, which is nice.

The colours are reproduced impressively as the screen doesn’t seem very vibrant or dull. The display setting is by default set to vibrant. But, Oppo has made some trade-offs. There is no support for Dolby Vision and IP rating, which is something that we get to see in the phones that are priced in its range. The company has offered a curved panel to give a premium appearance and feel to users. While the experience with a curved screen was mostly enjoyable, it became annoying after I started playing games on it because of accidental touches on the edges.

Since this 5G phone is being targeted at the ultra-premium segment, Oppo could have applied a top-end Gorilla Glass Victus coating for solid protection against scratches and damages. Nevertheless, the Gorilla Glass 5 panel is also good enough and the device also comes with a thin pre-applied screen card.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ performance

While the Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ may not feature the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC like other phones in its range, it still does a good job with Qualcomm’s 2022 Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. During my usage period with the phone, I found no signs of slowing down. So, I can say that the device is capable of handling multiple tasks with ease despite not having the newest chip. The videos with large file sizes can also be edited without much of an issue and the apps run smoothly. For gaming, I had no issues in playing heavy tiles like Genshin Impact on low to medium graphic settings. But, the device did seem to heat a bit after just about 15-20 mins of a gaming session. The back panel also gets warm while playing games on it and even charging it.

All-in-all, the combination of stereo speakers, a vibrant enough display and a powerful chip make for an enjoyable content experience. The speakers, though, focus more on midrange frequencies. The bass-heavy tracks sound is less emphasized, but the content is mostly enjoyable as long as you don’t push the speakers to higher volumes, disrupting the illusion of stereo separation.

For biometrics, I mostly used the in-display fingerprint sensor, which works flawlessly and is also pretty fast. Face Unlock doesn’t seem to be as reliable because the feature doesn’t work properly and it is not the fastest solution too.

People who like a clutter-free home screen and the app drawer will likely be disappointed to know that this one has a lot of pre-installed apps. The system by default takes around 18GB of storage and the pre-installed apps also occupy some space. You can remove some of the unnecessary third-party apps to make more space, but not the annoying native apps of Oppo. However, one shouldn’t have much of an issue with low storage space because the base model ships with 256GB of storage.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ battery life

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ sports a 4,700mAh battery. I was able to use the phone for less than 9 hours with heavy usage, involving a bit of gaming, social networking and photography sessions. With lighter usage, the device managed to last one and a half days. I liked that the battery didn’t drain out faster even after more than 20 apps were running in the background and multiple tasks were also being done on it.

The company bundles a 100W fast charger, which is a significant convenience for users. I personally found this charger to be very helpful in quickly topping up the phone’s battery whenever I needed to rush out for some urgent tasks. It’s great to see that Oppo has chosen not to follow the trend set by Samsung, Google, and Apple, and has included the charger in the retail box. This means that consumers won’t need to spend extra money to purchase a separate charger for the Oppo Reno 10 Pro+. The bundled 100W charger can offer 100 per cent charge in about 30 minutes of time.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ camera performance

The telephoto camera of Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ can actually take great portrait shots if taken rightly. The camera is able to deliver a very detailed shot, which is also the case for the primary sensor. As you can see in the playground shot, the kids are very far but the 64-megapixel telephoto has managed to capture a pretty clear image with good colours and the faces are almost recognizable, which is impressive and something that we rarely see. Although, the primary 50-megapixel sensor offers natural colours and the telephoto delivers more of a vibrant hue. But, the bokeh effect for portrait shots is just commendable. The edges are well trimmed and blur is also perfectly added. I can say that this Oppo can give tough competition to Pixel 7 in terms of portrait photography.

The shots taken with the primary camera are good, but it struggles to capture trees and skies in their original sense. The dynamic range, details and sharpness go for a toss. The noise is also visible. But, this happens only when you are trying to capture just the trees when there is close to no sunlight.

In ideal lighting conditions, the sharpness, exposure, and dynamic range are mostly on point. This also stands true for human portraits. The person’s face and the texture of the cloth are also well presented. The colours are not washed out and the skin tone also seems natural. The depth of field is captured pretty well and so, the subject separation is defined properly. I also liked the fact that the device is offering good output both outdoors and indoors.

Low-light photography is either hit or miss depending on how much light the camera is getting. The camera is able to produce a highly processes cinematic shot at night, but the objects that are in light are the only ones that are detailed and the rest of the frame is visible with a bit of clarity. The colours are retained well and noise is not visible. People can get some decent-looking low-light shots with the new Oppo Reno phone. It can shoot 4K videos at 60fps and the quality is pretty great with a good level of clarity, colours, exposure and dynamic range. The shots are also well-stabilised.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ reviewShould you buy it?

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro+ is a good ultra-premium phone from the company. It offers fast performance with a good content viewing screen. It can deliver solid battery life with light usage and the bundled 100W charger takes just around 15 mins to top up half the battery. The telephoto camera and primary rear camera are also very much capable of delivering good shots in daylight. However, the price of Rs 54,999 sounds too high, considering its immediate rival Pixel 7 is also available at a lower price. It also misses out on a few features like wireless charging, IP rating and more. Overall, if you are looking for a good camera-focused Oppo phone, I would recommend you buy the Reno 10 Pro+ during the sale events that take place every now or then on e-commerce platforms like Flipkart because it will be available at a discounted price.
